Altus specializes in delivering comprehensive engineering, prototyping, testing, and production capabilities, including design, fabrication, assembly, and compliance support to our Government customers. The Machinist will be responsible for the operation and programming of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill & lathe machines, as well as operation of conventional mill & lathe machines; developing and producing unique tools; implementing geometric dimensioning and tolerance practices; maintaining proficiency in the latest CAD/CAM (ex: MasterCam) capabilities through formal and informal company provided training.

We are looking for an individual that can use their Machinist experience to add value and make a significant impact as a Machinist to NAVAIR for this opportunity.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with customers to understand requirements, develop machining options, and translate requirements into functional hardware.
  • Actively train and mentor Apprentice Machinists and other junior shop personnel as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
  • Follow and enforce all safety standards within the Machine Shop.
  • Fabricate unconventional, one-of-a-kind items, systems, or apparatus in support of experimental project test articles.
  • Plan and conduct work from blueprints, drawings, test plans, and aviation technical publications.
  • Work well with others as part of a team.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on assigned machines.
  • Maintain tool inventories and procure equipment, supplies, tools, and consumables as required.
  • Perform other tasks as required to support customer requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Active U.S. DoD SECRET Security Clearance (Must have interim clearance before start date)
  • Must possess a valid Maryland Drivers License
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal trade school, college, or military training school highly desired.
  • Mix of conventional and CNC machining experience, along with knowledge of MasterCam or other common CAD/CAM programs required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of machining experience as a Journeyman Level Machinist.
  • Waterjet, AutoCAD, Solidworks, and/or ProEngineer experience desired.
  • Full command of various machining processes including milling, turning, grinding, and plating.
  • In-depth knowledge of materials including but not limited to carbon steel, aluminum, tool steel, stainless steel, composites, and fiberglass.
  • Skilled in mathematics required for machinists.
  • Ability to read a tape measure, micrometer, dial caliper, and all other measuring devices required by the Machinist Trade.
  • Forklift experience and/or 3D printing experience a plus.
  • Ability to train fellow employees on machine shop equipment and operations.

Work Conditions:

Conditions will vary. Capable of working outdoors and occasionally from elevated work platforms with a fall protection harness and in temperatures ranging from 0-120. The position will include: 45% standing, 20% bending, 15% reaching, 5% sitting, 5% walking, and 10% lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Overtime is a requirement of this position.
